QR code business card: how to make one people scan and act on

A business card has room for your name and a phone number; your website has room for your services, prices, reviews and a contact form. The QR code links the two: anyone who meets you in person points their camera and gets all of that in a second, without typing anything.

Where the QR code should lead

To your website, not your Instagram or a PDF. Your website has your services and the form, and anyone can get in touch from there. And if you change your prices or hours one day, you change them on the website and the printed QR code still works: on QRprofessionals the link and QR code stay the same when you edit the site.

Size, contrast and margin

  • Minimum size: about 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) on a card; bigger on posters read from a distance.
  • Contrast: a dark code on a light background. No light code on a dark background and never on top of a photo.
  • Margin: leave a clear border around the code, with no text or graphics touching it.
  • Test before printing: scan it with two different phones from the distance it will be read at.

What to print next to the QR code

A QR code without text is a square nobody knows the purpose of. Add one line saying what people will find —“Scan me: services, prices and booking”, “See my work”— and your short web address underneath, for anyone who’d rather type it.

Where to put your QR code besides the card

  • At the reception of your practice, studio or gym.
  • On flyers, posters and the door of your premises.
  • On your slides when you give a talk or workshop.
  • On packaging, invoices or receipts, if you sell physical products.
  • In your printed portfolio or at the entrance to an exhibition.
